Subj: [kl] A little teaching experience
Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 11:23:00 -0400

The business about bounced babies, and musical pulse, reminded me of a time
when I was just starting to freelance in London, and taking all the work of
whatever sort I could get.

A pal of mine, Mike Angress, had some private teaching -- he'd go around
people's houses and teach their kids a couple of days a week, to supplement
his income from playing -- and he suddenly had some orchestral work in that
meant he couldn't do his teaching the next day. So he phoned me up, and
asked whether I'd do it for him, rather than his cancelling. I was free, and
so I said yes.

There were three students, two clarinet players and one beginning recorder
player, and the first two went off without problem.

However, the third, the recorder player, was more problematic. He played me
a simple tune in 4/4, and the rhythm was all over the place.

"Did Mr Angress ask you to learn this particular one for this week?" I asked,
thinking that perhaps he hadn't practised it.

"Oh yes, we've had two lessons already on it," the little boy said.

"Really??" I said. "What did Mr Angress say about how you play it?"

"Well, he said it wasn't very good. But,..."

And then he stopped.

"But what?" I said. "Come on, you can tell me. What were you going to say?"

"Well,...it's easier to play it for Mr Angress," he said.

"...you see, he hits me on the top of my head on every beat."
