Hey Mark,

I am not familiar with the brand of clarinet that you have but if you have
one that is made by an unknown mfg. there may be a problem with a bent key
causing a pad not to seat. The materials on a lot of these cheaper
instruments is very soft and can become misaligned VERY easily. Because of
the fact that your problem seems to simulate depressing the register key, I
suspect that you have a leak either on one of the upper trill keys or
possibly the A or G# key. A quick leak test is to take each joint and plug
one end, then close all keys and cover holes with a light touch, then blow
into the end of the joint that is not plugged. If you feel or hear any air
leaking then you know you have a leak. This test does not replace a good
visit to the local repair tech however. It just helps to identify the
problem. But to totally fix the problem I would highly recommend that you
purchase a good quality clarinet.
