There was an article by Geoffrey Norris in the London Daily Telegraph on 27=
th=20
October, saying that the original manuscript score of Rachmaninov's 2nd=20
symphony had been discovered. I can't find it on the Telegraph web site, s=
o=20
I'll quote the main points...

As a leading authority on Rachmaninov, Norris was the first expert to=20
authenticate it. He received an e-mail saying that it had been discovered =
in=20
a cellar in Switzerland. He travelled to Switzerland to meet the finder,=20
where "The man who met me off the train was carrying a plastic Co-op carri=
er=20
bag. Hidden within it was the very manuscript of Rachmaninov's Second=20
Symphony. Moreover, it was unquestionably genuine".

Later he writes: "The first four pages of music have at some stage become=20
detached and are missing, as is a title page - hence, perhaps, the fact tha=
t=20
it has remained unidentified for so long. Most of the final page, on which=
=20
there might have been a date and signature, has also gone astray. But the=
=20
handwriting, the paper, and the manner in which Rachmaninov made correction=
s=20
=2D are all as they should be."

He finishes the article by saying "The hope now is that an accessible libra=
ry=20
buys it. Nobody wants it to disappear for another 100 years".

The manuscript is to be auctioned by Sotheby's in London on 7th December. =
=20
They estimate it may fetch =A3300,000 - =A3500,000 ($549,000 - $915,000).
