I live in Wisconsin and I'm wondering if our
music programs are perhaps more generously funded and staffed than those of
 some other states.

Here where I live in eastern Iowa the children start with a twice a week 45
minute group lesson on their instrument of choice. 8 kids in a group. They
have these lessons for 10 weeks during the summer before entering 6th grade
at the middle schools. The summer lessons are $20 for all twenty. My
granddaughter started on trumpet this year. Now she has 3 band classes a
week plus a group trumpet lesson once a week. They have so many kids in band
that they have two 6th grade bands at her school. I don't know how many in
the 6th grade orchestra. You can join the band the first week of 6th grade
 without the summer lessons too.
