Anthony Storr in "Music And The Mind", $14 in paperback, talks about
this a lot. Overall, he agrees with you. He offers data (letters,
etc) from Stravinsky, Bartok, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Wagner and a whole
bunch of others, including from philosophers who either played or
speculated about the meaning of music.
