Bates-Renaud's brand new documentary about oboe maker Paul Laubin and
the firm of A. Laubin, Inc. of Peekskill, NY. The 50-minute VHS tape
offers a rare glimpse into the Laubin workshop as you look over the
shoulders of the makers of what are arguably the world's finest oboes
and English horns.
Accompanied by music played by some of America's finest oboe and English
horn players, we tour the small four-person shop, where oboes are made
as they were 150 years ago - predominantly hand work, assisted by lathes
and drills that are today motorized. Oboist Sherry Sylar and English
horn player Thomas Stacy of the New York Philharmonic discuss their
Laubin instruments and also play portions of the soundtrack.
While the Laubin factory makes only oboes and English horns, this
documentary will be of interest to any woodwind player or teacher, any
instrument maker or repair person, or anyone with a respect for the
