The reason I was able to end my phrase in measure 5 with a *nearly*
climactic sustained C after two ascending staccatos, and yet the melody
remains 'open' for extension and for further development, is because of
your opening D chord and the tonic uncertainty that it creates.

Thus my C is not an unquestionable resolution, but it *is* a clear
signal that something new is about to happen.
