It seems that the mouthpieces of the day had a tenon that reached all

Tony and Walter, I know that this is going to sound like a weak claim,
but *honestly* --- I made my guess about the tenons touching about 20
minutes before Walter's explanation arrived in my mailbox.

We've discussed many times whether materials make a difference (plastic
vs. wood, etc). The fact that at least one well known barrel craftsman
feels that the exterior shape of a barrel makes a difference..... this
continues to stimulate my curiosity that there's more to an instrument's
sound than just the geometry of the air column.

Cheers and Thank You,
Bill
