To add to the comments about early teachers -
fortunately, I never really had a bad one! I grew up
with music, in the form of a live-in aunt who played
piano and a father who enjoyed classical. The school
system I was in started us in third grade, if we
wanted to play. I started on violin [and was
eventually invited to play that no more!]. I started
clarinet in the fourth grade. I was an OK player, and
our band director moved up to Junior High when we did.
He switched me to bassoon, but had no problem letting
me try any instrument the school had. Four years ahead
of me, my brother was playing cello and clarinet.I
still remember him passing a hat at PTA meetings to
get another instrument or something. That quiet
acceptance of what ever we wanted to try musically is
what I think of when I play and when I try to
encourage my son in his drum playing for his school
band. Thanks Mr. Chido!
