I'm fascinated with this thread. All of us have opinions of
conductors; but darned few of us have the background to render significant
opinions, as do the two of you.

I respect Barenboim (and respected Solti) because each is/was
actually doing conducting and neither has done anything, musically that
turned my stomach. I will say that I attended a Robin Hood Dell Concert in
the early 70's (old Dell) at which Barenboim made his Philadelphia
conducting debut. About 30 minutes before the concert I found him in the
back of the shell practicing every cue and gesture. At the time I didn't
realize that he intended to change careers. I remember nothing else about
the concert; so he must not have been fabulous or miserable.
