Hello there! During the fall semester of school here, it is football
(American) season whereas the local schools compete against each other. The
school band goes along to play "pep" ditties during the game to pep up the
players and the crowd. During the middle of the game ("half time"), the
players take a break to the locker rooms to catch their breath and listen to
the coach inspire or yell at them for their mistakes. During this time there
is a big lull in which the two school bands take turns marching formations
and playing music to entertain the spectators. Although the band director is
present, it is two students, the Drum Major and Asst. Drum Major who direct
the band. They most always have a special and snappier looking uniform and
are most always a member of the senior graduating class. In comes mostly
from the old days when the band was led down the streets buy a high
strutting leader with a large (about 5-6 foot) baton as most band directors
were probably to old to march in long parades. I hope this helps.
