A good point - and one all of us former high school directors remember
well. I always looked for a woodwind player who had very strong leadership
skills - and musical skills. I tried not to use brass and
percussion. Sometimes that didn't work well - but most of the time, a good
jr. or sr. with leadership skills, who was well liked and enthusiastic but
not a great player was chosen.
