 Terry,

The problem with doing it this way is that the piano part is then in the
incorrect key (well, the entire thing would be also), and that just is not
preferable for this particular work. The Fantasy Pieces has a terrifically
difficult piano part that is equal to the clarinet part in terms of it's
importance and even more critical in terms of the colors (in part, defined
by key). It is no more accompaniment to the music than the clarinet part
is. The comparison with the Mozart Concerto is not really accurate
because, while several will argue that it should never be moved away from
it's original key of A Major, the focus of a concerto remains primarily on
the soloist with the accompaniment being simply that - accompaniment (with
 wonderful interludes of course).

In my opinion, this is not a work that you should program on anything other
than an A clarinet. Certainly, study the piece on Bb (although it won't be
the same when you finally do get an A to play on) on the A clarinet part,
but don't perform it until you have an A.

 Best wishes,
 Roger Garrett
