I've got one for you...

Last year when I was in London on a performance tour, we had a concert at
the University of Surrey. Well, a little background first...one of my
professors is British and the U of Surrey is his alma mater (undergrad).
Well, you know how the British use the word "bloody"? Yeah, well, turns out
it's a bad word and I didn't know it at the time. My professor would say
bloody this, bloody that, to such a degree that I didn't pick up on it being
bad (forgive me if you're British and reading this). Sooo...we're touring
the campus, and we're in the chapel. It was about 5:30 (or 17:30 as
Europeans say!) and I was talking with one of the grad students and a priest
there in the sanctuary. I was starving, and I said to the grad student (who
was this really cute guy, by the way) "I'm bloody hungry-when are we going
to eat?" They both looked at me like, well, I can't describe it. I insulted
them (especially the priest, I'm sure) without knowing it. The student
explained to me what the word meant, and I felt so bad and stupid about the
whole thing. I told them about my professor, so they were understanding,
thankfully. When I got back, I told the professor what had happened and he
exclaimed "you're not going to blame this on ME, are you?"

Needless to say, I haven't used the word since (until now..geesh!)

I had an even worse experience. When I learned French, I was taught that the
French word for ''hugging'' is ''embrasser''. At the age of seventeen I made
my first visit to France. After I had asked a small favour from a girl of
my age, and she had done it, I thanked her by saying: ''Mademoiselle, je
vous embrasse'', ''Miss, I hug you''. After he had knocked me almost KO, her
brother told me I had just declared in public that I was going to sleep with
her. The year was 1961, we didn't even think of sleeping with girls .....
