Subj: [kl] Tongue Position & Abe Galper Tribute
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 13:06:32 -0400

Following up on the article by Prof. Wheeler regarding the position of the
tongue when playing the clarinet...

Abe Galper (agalper@-----.com) has incorporated these concepts into his
book "Tone, Technique & Staccato," which is now used in many universities.
The exercises at the beginning of the book are devoted to improving the
tongue position in the different registers.

Abe once told me about his Chinese students and how their clarinet tone was
so wonderful, probably because of the position of the tongue when playing the
instrument.

You can learn more about Abe's stint in China and his accomplishments
elsewhere by reading the article I am working on for the September issue of
The Clarinet magazine. The article is meant as a tribute to Abe who will be
celebrating his 80th birthday in August.

In fact, I would welcome ANY MEMBER of this list to write to me privately
with your own thoughts, anecdotes, or stories about Abe. Has he influenced
you in any way? Helped you improve your playing? Are you using any of his
inventions? Or his books? Anything you might offer will be helpful to me as I
prepare my article. Thanks in advance for your input.
