A basic fact of neurology is that we can (frequently do, every
moment of our lives) turn particular nerves on and off. Hence we can
attend to some stimuli while being unaware of others. Demonstrating
the cellular mechanisms for this (with electrodes and meters) is part of
a college education in neurology.

As a simple example, think of how you don't 'hear' the chiming or
ticking of a clock in your bedroom in the still of night.... unless you
listen for it.
