For almost every clarinet on which I work, the throat Bb becomes FAR clearer
if I install a thick (water key for brass) cork pad and shape it like so:
\_/ like a few manufacturers do. The key needs to be bent slightly to
retain good opening.
This allows air to vibrate in and out of the hole without going around such
a turtuous route, hence less turbulence, hence freeer vibration of air
through the tone hole itself, i.e. good tone for Bb. I have noticed no
detrimental effects in doing this.
