On Tuesday, I finally managed to break away from the children and
husband to get to my "Pops" community band rehearsal. I had not played,
practiced or been to a rehearsal in almost 3 years. Boy, did it feel
fantastic to finally get out there to play my clarinet. The band had
dwindled and changed names.

I had been trucking the 2 children to their band rehearsals, private
music lessons and their concerts (2 per year) dreaming the entire time of
getting to my rehearsals. Due to homework, karate, husband not home in time
to watch the children, etc., I just couldn't get there. I also thought the
homework was a priority. Well, I have finally made myself the priority
because playing clarinet is really a big priority for me as it is probably
half of my "being". I just feel better all the way around! I always snuck
peeks at the Klarinet mailing list every day wishing I had more time!
(Playing vicariously??)

This band sent me a postcard to tell me when the next 3 rehearsals
were, they had changed names, same conductor. That might be a good tool for
anyone out there that has anything to do with a community band a good way to
draw former members back in! It reminded me that I hadn't been to the
rehearsals in ages. The postcard said "We have missed having you at band
practice with us! We know you love music that's why you jooined us to begin
with. We hope you will join us again." The front of the card said "Make a
'note' to join us again".

I played well, only a few wrong notes - mainly due to trying to cope
with reading music with bifocals on. My back was sore the next morning from
doing all the breathing suddenly!

To the professionals on this list - don't think it is pure drudgery
having to play all the time - I would love to have the time and slightly more
talent to play all the time!! There are some of us who would love to have
the honor to be professional!! In the meantime - I'll be happy playing every
2 weeks at rehearsal. By the way, we have a concert on 4/29 and I just
jumped back in on 4/3! Talk about pressure!!!
