I haven't read all of the posts on this subject in detail, so I may be
missing something here. However, in formal language theory, a meta-language
is a language used to describe other languages. Hence SGML and XML are
metalanguages. (Note that neither address the problem of semantic
interpretation directly, just syntax.)

When we say "meta-music," are we talking about describing music by using
music? Or are we really looking at developing a formal metalanguage for
music? I suspect that there are some that might be considered partial
candidates already, including MIDI and HyTime.

Yes, --- although that wasn't what I typed, but that was my error.
Presumably you will receive my follow-up post along similar lines soon.

Perhaps I am circling around the concept of music "being true to
itself" which has a problem of logic if done incorrectly. Actually I'm
a bit embarrassed by my original post now, but I still "feel" that
there's a germ of reality in it.... somewhere.

Cheers and thanks,
Bill
