This week heard solo cello performance by Derek Menchen (who grew up
here) on electric cello. He combined Bach solo suites with
extrapolations into all kinds of music, jazz, gospel and so on. For
instrance, last "set" started with (which he announced as "The key of C
is often used to represent humanity, as in Strauss's meditation " began
with intro to Thus Sprach , included Bach, Poor Butterfly, and more.
Very fine.
I aspire in a minor way to similar capabilities.
Gee, i found it satisfying to watch the surprise of a church choir
director on Christmas eve service who had neglected to give us (string
quartet) a copy of all the hymns when we asked what key "Joy to the
world" and after the first verse played harmony parts.
It has taken *me* a long time to develope a moderately accurate sense of
intervals so that i can play (some) of what i hear on the spot, but what
a kick it adds to playing.
Developing moderate competence to improve on familiar jazz tunes is fun,
too.
