Actually, I think that is a vocal technique called "throat singing"
(I thought all singing was "throat" singing), in which one tunes the
throat and head to emphasize certain harmonics. It can be done solo.
Look up "Ondar" on CDNow for examples of throat singing from Tuva, or
try the Fresh Air interview with Ondar at
