Brings back fond memories of junior high. I'm originally from Central PA
(Paxtang-Central Dauphin Jointure) and I remember being sent several times
to the principal's office for discipline (paddling). This was in the mid
50s. There was nothing more of a wise ass in those days than a 15 year-old
boy. Guess that even holds true today.

I did learn something from the experience however. If you kept a thick
wallet in your back pocket, it didn't sting as much! :).

Paddling also carried over into the fraternity life at college. But I made a
paddle for my "big brother" that was a breadboard of a crystal radio with a
whip antenna for the handle. It worked but was extremely fragile. So he
never swatted me with it!!

But looking at a student cross-eyed today can get you into trouble. Wonder
if paddling would have any effect?! I don't think I got screwed up
emotionally because of it, except that I did become a clarinet player!!!

In central Pennsylvania we had "THE BLACK PADDLE" (glossy black, with holes
and a pirate skull). As an adult, my psychologist insisted that no child
over the age of three ever learned anything from a paddling. But I'm sure
that one of her children would not have been worse off if paddled at a later
age.
