If it doesn't really exist don't we all feel better now that no one actually
heard that last note we missed. What a relief!!

In an earlier post I mentioned a clarinet player at a local university (back
in the 60's-70's) that was experimenting with multiphonics. He actually was
able to play duets and simple trios with himself. But... I forgot to mention
a trombonist at another college. When teaching intonation on the low brass
instruments he would naturally wander to the subject of difference tones. He
would have his prize senior student show up for class that day to assist with
the demonstration. They would play a simple childs song (Mary Had A Little
Mutton) noticeably out of tune, and the same degree out of tune throughout,
and we could all hear clearly the low difference tone follow along with the
same tune.
