METRONOME, musician's device, usually pyramidal in shape, that clicks
audibly at exactly timed intervals as an aid to keeping correct tempo.
Functionally, it is an upside-down pendulum, the upright, oscillating hand
bearing a small counterweight that can be raised or lowered vertically
according to the tempo desired. This adjustment regulates the number of
beats per minute in models that are wound by hand; others operate
electrically. It was patented in 1816 by the German musician and inventor
Johann Nepomuk Maelzel (1772-1838); however, it was actually conceived about
1812 by the Dutch inventor Dietrich Nikolaus Winkel (c. 1780-1826).

I just found this on a search. Mozart may have been ahead of his time, but
not quite THAT far ahead!

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
