My similar experience was also the result of an attempt at home repair or
maintenance. I was trying to cut a piece of insulation material to
insulate a basement window in a laundry room. Naturally, I took a wild
swipe at the insulation with a large and very sharp knife, slicing off a
significant amount of flesh on my left index finger. That was on a
Thursday night, and after a quick trip to the hospital emergency room for
about 8 or 10 stitches, I was able to manage a three-hour orchestra
rehearsal on Friday evening (playing bassoon). I learned that plastic
bandages rather than fabric ones will better enable you to cover tone
holes. Fortunately, I seemed to recover completely within a couple of
weeks, except I still occasionally experience a little numbness in the tip
of that finger. Oh, yes, and I suppose a little numbness of the brain,
 also.
