Subj: [kl] Navy Band Literature

I went to a US. Navy Band concert (from D.C.) Saturday night, and was
pleasantly surprised. They actually played good literature!! No Broadway
hits with the Sea Chanters screaming out lyrics, no pop cheese - only
standard band classics. Started out with Shost. Festive Ov., Bennett Suite
Old American Dances, Jager Variations, a Piccolo uptempo solo w/band,
Schwanter the bagpiper, and just to wake up the crowd, a medley of TV
themes from the 50's-60's. About time they played good stuff - the last
time I heard them play quality literature like this was at ClarFest
(Cincinatti). The audience seemed to be very responsive. I had about 8
students there, so was glad that they got exposed to that literature - I've
never been in the audience for several of those works - only been a
performing member (its fun to watch someone else do the work sometimes).
