I once got the ultimate compliment from a band director while on tour with
the OSU band. I was on Eb and this director commented that when I needed to
be heard I was and when the Eb didn't have the lead voice I wasn't heard.
Blending and tuning are the two main keys to good Eb. Playing Eb in a band
is a real tightrope act. Most of the time your the bridge between the
flutes and clarinets tuning wise. AND then there are the unisons with the
piccolo. BUT THE POWER - to be used judiciously - to be able to balance the
hold brass section with one stick of wood!!
One time we did the Messian "Exotic Birds" at the U of Wis. This has
real screamer high altitude parts for the Eb and piccolo. It seemed that
every rehearsal our (Eb & pic) chairs were moved farther and farther from
the main group.
