Clark Brody told me he experienced exactly this. Apparently he toured with
the Goldman Band for a summer (in a section that included a lot of monster
players from NYC, including Gino Cioffi). After playing crappy band music in
the middle of a loud situation for a whole summer, not being able to listen
properly to his own playing during performance, he discovered that he really
needed to rebuild his playing. He said it was like starting all over again.

So much for symphonic band being 'educational.'

I find this to be so true. If you cant hear yourself, DON'T play. God only
knows what is coming out.

For this reason I refuse to play in a concert band.

Except on Eb of course. I can ALWAYS hear my self on the Eb. Hell, they can
probably hear me in Europe!
