The issue of the soloist playing in the tuttis is very complex and
highly controversial. In theory, keyboard instruments should do it
because they can help fill in and/or sustain the harmony. Even a
string play can do it by playing double stops. But it is not at all
clear what purpose is served when a single line instrument like the
clarinet does it. And even if the clarinet (or bassoon, French horn,
flute, etc.) does it, it has to be kept out of the way and not
simply be another place for prominence.
