Subj: [kl] Mouthpieces & Research paper (2 different questions)
Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 01:45:22 -0400

I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. (Or ask two questions in one
email for those of you who are a bad shot or against killing birds...)

#1 I recently tried Larry Combs LC1 and LC3 mouthpieces. I really liked
both of them and I wondered about comparable mouthpieces. I use a Rovner
MkIII and Vandoren V-12 2.5 reeds or sometimes 2.5 Olivieri. I know this
question is a difficult one because there are so many variables.
Unfortunately I live in a rural area and there is no music store within an
1.5 hour 2 hour drive where I could try out a variety of mouthpieces and
unfortunately shipping mouthpieces and paying the fees to try them out from
Woodwind and Brasswind or some similar place can get expensive quickly.

#2 For a research paper I wanted to follow the history of an instrument.
Being a clarinetist and a tubaist I narrowed it down to clarinet, tuba, or
oboe for the instrument to research. Can anybody recommend some good books
on the history and evolution of any of these instruments? Basically I want
to follow the instrument's evolution and some key people in its
making/evolution. The paper does not need to go into extreme detail. The
teacher prefers we don't use a lot of electronic sources, sticking with
books, magazine articles, etc.

Thanks in Advance,

Justin Wood

"Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate
enterprises? If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is
because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he
hears, however measured or far away." --Henry David Thoreau
