Andy;
There has been a lot of controversy why there is a grunt in the upper
registers of the clarinet. Some say that the octave tube is too small,
too big, in the wrong position. Also some say that you need a special pad
for the register key(made of rubber or cork or a plastic nipple that is
partially inserted into the vent and remains inside the vent when the key is
depressed.)
All clarinet players go through this stage and there is a couple of
things that cause the "grunt"
1. Undeveloped embouchure
2. Poor breath control(lack of air pressure)

I have found most of the time, even with seasoned clarinetists' that the
lack of air pressure support is the cause of the problem.

I have installed many of these different gizmo's, and most of the time they
work(psychologically) for the player.
