Some of them expected cornets, especially mid- to late-19th century French
composers. Another point to be made in this area is that many 19th century
composers scored for F trumpets, sometimes together with b flat cornets.
Even Vaughan Williams' "London" symphony is scored for F trumpets, and the
brass section must have sounded very different form anything heard
nowadays from a non-period orchestra, as the horns and trombones would
also have been significantly different in bore, and an English orchestra
would have used the F tuba.
There was more than kind of F trumpet, just to confuse matters further;
maybe Kjf knows more about this than I do.
