Unfortunately, the answer isn't conclusive.

'E natural' gets a whole lot more votes, because Guy says he played it
with many French colleagues, and they *all* took E natural. (Because,
he said, anyway eet ees much nizair:-) So the French tradition does
seem to support the natural way of playing. (Of course.)

But the man who actually played it for Poulenc, a colleague of Guy's,
died two months ago.

Anyway, he says that if any firmer evidence surfaces, he'll let me know,
and I'll pass it on. He didn't know of any relevant old recording.

He also tells me he's recording, with Yvonne Loriod, a short,
unpublished piece for clarinet and piano by Messiaen, so that will be
out in due course.

Which is nice. (This remark is specially for Fast Show fans, you poor,
deprived Americans you.)
