Just to make sure of this, since I'd been so definite, I put the
relevant bars into Sibelius, and played them to myself both ways a
couple of dozen times -- and now I'm not so sure!

I had thought that the person who taught me that Poulenc would have been
wrong to want an E# was Poulenc himself -- in other words, that it was
my judgement of his style, learnt from exposure to his music, that
decided the issue for me.

But apparently I surprise myself:-)
