Subj: [kl] Poulenc 2 clarinet sonata - note question
Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 07:48:47 -0500

Dear Poulenc players,

I have a text question for the Poulenc Sonata for 2 Clarinets (Bb and A).
In the first movement at rehearsal number 1 the Bb clarinet has two
grace notes d-sharp and e-sharp. Normally it could be assumed that the
first 16th note of the 2nd beat would therefor be e-sharp as well, since
there is no natural sign (at least in my edition - Chester 1919,1990).
This measure occurs 8 times on the page.

In my recording of Sabine and Wolfgang Meyer they play an e-natural every
time on the 2nd beat, so my question is:

Is someone privy to further info on this: such as a copy of the
manuscript or an edition in which this note has a natural sign in
contrast to my edition.

If a discussion of text differences in this sonata has already been
undertaken, please point me to it - I did a search on Sneezy and did not
find anything (although there is alot of info on the Sonata for clarinet
and piano).

Thanks in advance,
Don Christensen
