I was always more frightened about the possibility of getting "ear cancer"
from playing with loud community bands. There was one band that I belonged to
where the clarinet section was relegated during rehearsals to an area of the
hall that I called Molokai because it was as if we clarinetists had leprosy.
In retrospect, it was probably healthier for us to be away from all that
brass...
