 Beethoven did indeed do the arrangement (it is his opus 38, the septet was opus 20)
 and there is apparently an alternative version for violin.  The Beaux Arts Trio
 recorded the violin version for Phillips some years ago.  According to the current
 Schwann, there is also a Gallo CD with the violin version (but not by the Beaux
 Arts).  BTW, my Musica Rara edition of the piece identifies it as being for
 "clarinet, bassoon/cello, and piano."  I wonder if anyone has ever done it with
 violin, bassoon and synthesizer.  ;^)
