Subj: [kl] So I have to tell you about my New Year's gig!
Date: Fri, 1 Jan 1999 11:08:14 -0500

By some grace of God, I took my second clarinet to this gig. I don't know
why, other than the fact that I didn't know the details of the job, and if I'd
have to walk around outside for lengths of time with my clarinet, I'd rather
it be my second horn rather than my good one. (My second's pretty good,
though and I enjoy playing it.)

So I'm driving with my little direction sheet going farther and farther and
farther north... (About an hour and a half drive) to the middle of Nowhere,
MA. We get to Opie's Country Kitchen and find that Opie moved out some time
ago, and he turned off the heat on his way!

The coordinators of this First Night event did the best they could and moved
in electric space heaters for us, but they hardly dented the cold.

So a lot of chilly polkas later in a town that had one crappy pizza restaurant
with NO COFFEE, I discovered that just about the only thing that works in the
cold is your tongue.

Ah well. I watched the New Year roll in on my car clock with the heat cranked
high and the local radio station (the only one I could get) playing Cherry
Poppin Daddies, on my way to the Bates Motel (well it just looked like that.
I think it was called The Bald Eagle Motel) where I had half a beer and some
Doritos with the euphonium player and the guitar player while we watched Jerry
Seinfeld on HBO.
