Interlochen Academy Band and Wind Ensemble Concert, with proceeds
to benefit Boys and Girls Club of Grand Traverse, will perform at
8 p.m. Saturday, April 11 in Corson Auditorium. An original work
by composer David Maslanka will be performed, with Interlochen
faculty John Stanley Ross conducting.
Showcased will be "Sea Dreams," the world premiere of an
original work by composer David Maslanka, who will be visiting the
Interlochen campus that week. This piece was co-commissioned by
nine universities and Interlochen Arts Academy.
Julie Schleif, Academy instructor of horn, and Douglas
Campbell, Camp instructor of horn, will be featured in "Sea
Dreams." Schleif and Campbell work well together, since Campbell
was Schleif's private horn instructor at Michigan State University.
The program features works by American composers. Performed
will be "Variations of a Shaker Melody" by Aaron Copland; "When
Jesus Wept" by William Schuman; Maslanka's "Sea Dreams;" "Elegy for
a Young American" by Ronald LoPresti; and "Commando March" by
Samuel Barber.

ObNote for Klarinet:
There is a nice long Eb clarinet solo somewhere in Sea Dreams I'm
told; my son Stephen will be performing that part. Come on by if
you're in the area (and tell me how it went!). One other interesting
note; David Maslanka's brother (Robert) was my high school chemistry
teacher. Seven degrees of separation my foot :^)
