Bill, you don't say which article you refer to (Naylor or Bigio?). I'm 
certainly no expert, either on wood qualities or physics. I believe it's 
correct to say that a smoother surface would have some effect on the way 
sound waves behave - what effect that might be, I couldn't say. 
 
Naylor's article goes into some depth (no pun intended) about how the oil 
affects the wood.
