Re: marching bands
First let me say that when I went to college I was overjoyed to
find out that girls were not allowed to be in the marching band, only the
concert band (yes this was about 1000 years ago!). Not that I don't
appreciate a good maraching band, I just didn't enjoy doing it. However,
having done alot of judging over the years, I do see one musical benefit of
marching. When I compare vocal and orchestral students with band students
the band students do seem to have a better sense of rhythm, of where the
beat is(well, most of them) and I think this is because of the marching
experience, of having to move to a steady beat. After all, is't this what
Dalcroze is all about? No, I don't advocate marching choirs or orchestras,
just wonder if anyone else had made this observation.
