I am also a violin player. Each string has MANY notes and they overlap with
the other strings. So to avoid the open strings one will play in a higher
position. Open strings are best avoided by reasons of vibrato, and because
the tone quality of the open note is inferior to the rest of the notes on the
string. You higher up you play on the string the darker the tone quality is.
I know this wasn't a clarinet topic, but since it was brought up, I figured
I'd throw my two cents in. it really helps to be an all-around player
(well,for me anyway)
