Dear Klarinet Colleagues,
I now conduct a high school age band here in Germany in which every
member has been taking private lessons for several years and entrance is
by recommendation or audition only. (Recent concert included Walter
Piston: Tunbridge Fair; Morton Gould: American Salute; Percy Grainger:
Molly on the Shore; Alfred Reed: Russian Christmas Music; etc.)
I have a 17 year old clarinettist who took first prize for all of Germany
in clarinet solo competition for youth this year (Jugend Musiziert). He
can technically and musically master literally anything put in front of
him. He played Weber: Concertino with the band 4 years ago.
Now my question: Can you make suggestions of solos for clarinet and band
by AMERICAN COMPOSERS in the moderate-to-difficult to difficult to
next-to-impossible categories. All I can think of is Alfred Reed: Rahoon,
but I would like more ideas to choose from.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Don Christensen
