Subj: inexpensive mouthpieces from the past
Date: Mon, 8 Sep 1997 14:00:16 -0400

Back about 15 years ago, when I started teaching. The Woodwind Company
(Woodwind Brasswind now) would sell any mouthpiece with a new clarinet
purchase for only $15-20!! (I'm going by memory, but I'm pretty sure that
it was under $25.) I would have my students get a $55-$75 mouthpiece as a
spare or replacement for what they already had. If they didn't want to get
it - I gave them the money, and got it for myself. Imagine paying only $20
for a new Hite or Gigliotti top of their line mouthpiece!!! Now they give
a $10 credit towards the purchase of one. Oh well, the good times couldn't
last forever...

It doesn't excuse Buffet for the mouthpieces but just for anyone inte=
rested - we get our music store to replace the mouthpieces that come w=
ith the instruments with mouthpieces of our (the band directors) choic=
e. No way is a parent going to buy a new mouthpiece (at least in my a=
rea) after having bought a new clarinet - so we take that step out and=
just have the mouthpiece figured in on the cost of a new clarinet.
