Hi Mary,

I'm performing a quartet this Spring for Clarinet, Violin, and Two Guitars.
It's by Filippo Gragnani (say "Gron-yonnie") and doesn't seem to be very
well known. It is (and I say this with total bias and prejudice) a
_wonderful_ piece and is challenging in many ways for every instrument in
the ensemble. It opens with an Allegro, followed by a theme and
variations section. Then comes a formal Minuet and Trio, concluding with
an exciting and spirited Rondo. The greatest technical difficulties
reside, without a doubt, in the two guitar parts, although the clarinet
and violin parts may not be so easily tossed off either. The music is
composed firmly in the classical tradition, with no hint of the Romantic
era, despite Gragnani's death circa 1812 (he was born in 1767).

Gragnani also wrote a Sextet (Op. 9) for flute, clarinet, violin, two
guitars, and cello. What may interest you most are his three duos for
Clarinet and Guitar (without opus numbers). His quartet is certainly
worth looking into, as I'm sure are the Sextet and clarinet/guitar duos.
'Hope this helps!
