Thank you for the info on the varieties of basset horn. As I don't know what
kind of altos I've been hearing, my comment (on tone quality) was probably a
bit too generalised
to be valid. The same goes for basset horns, come to think of it. I've heard
far more basset horns on recordings or the radio than I've heard live - there
they sound far more like low clarinets than altos ever do; the latter sound
(live!) to me far more like attenuated Franco-American bass clarinets.
Obviously, you can write from considerable first-hand experience, which I
can't.
