My previous messag got stuck somewhere. Queen Emma on record seems decidedly
superficial and brisk, and some altissimo notes sound out of tune. One may well
think the recording engineer could have fixed this on occasion. Queen Thea
deserves to be queen. I remember a broadcast performance by Queen Janet of the
Brahms quintet at the beginning of her career which sounded amazingly sloppy
and was done with a tone which was reedy in quite the wrong way. She has
probably improved. I think we make clear when the discussion is purely a matter
of taste and when actual playing ability is being questioned. The attacks so
far have been a bit unfocussed. The comments of R. Monsen & S. Prescott should
be well worth reading on this.
