Dan,

I owe a special thanks to the list for "introducing" us. You have enriched
my life not only with your erudition but in introducing me to a higher plane
of clarinet and basset horn music, guiding and encouraging my musicological
studies and in being the greatest companion. I know we will keep in touch.
Live long and prosper!

Keith

Subject: [kl] Saying goodbye

For the past year or more, I find that the topics
on clarinet are often a restatement of topics
there were posted two decades or more ago.
Besides, I am so out of the world of clarinet
playing that I don't feel I can any longer make of
a substantive contribution. My expertise has
always been historical and inquisitorial. I
rarely, if ever, gave suggestions of the mechanics
of clarinet playing because there were far too
many list members infinitely more qualified than I
to speak on such matters. I liked subjects like
editions, literature, performance practice, the
18th century, etc.

Mostly, the topics for which I made a contribution
(or at least hope that I did) were matters like
the ubiquitous but entirely unexplained and
unachievable "nice dark sound" as well as which
instrument, or mouthpiece, or barrel, or body type
enabled that "nice dark sound." I also bitched a
lot about the arrogance of clarinetists who feel
that the pitch of the instrument that they employ
is their decision and not the composer's.

Bottom line is that I am not enjoying myself on
the list, partly because of the repetitive nature
of the postings, and partly because I'm getting
old. At 79, I find myself thinking about other
things than reeds, stands, editions, ligatures,
etc.

I hope that over the last quarter century (has it
really been that long?), some few remarks I made
were of substance, or important, or valuable, or
whatever.

Anyone who wants to write to me is welcome to do
so, but I'm signing off clarinet at the end of the
week. I'm simply too pooped out to continue saying
the same thing and the reward for making
interesting postings (I hope) is not forthcoming.
