You're wrong -- at least to the extent that if the group has files that
contain large numbers of pieces from which to choose, it's pretty easy to
put together a series of year-around concerts -- free -- and without much
repetition. Some of the music only cycles every six or seven years. Personal
experience. I'm not sure what the definition of a "true" community band
really is; however, it probably has to be a musical group that is built
on musicians within a community who come together to play and perform
music. I think you need to check some local groups to see what they're
offering to an individual since you haven't been involved in a while.

The problem is I don't think you can build a community band concert program
out of the Holst and Vaughan Williams suites, marches and a lot of old
transcriptions of orchestral overtures. Most of the music than populates
the
programs of modern American bands (whether community- or school-based) was
written from the 1950s on, mostly for school band programs at the high
school and college levels. I can't imagine a community band today
repeatedly
playing concerts consisting of one piece by Holst, Vaughan Williams or
maybe
Grainger, three or four Sousa and King (or similar) marches and several
transcriptions of opera or concert overtures that were popular with
orchestra audiences at the turn of the 20th century.

Maybe I'm wrong - I haven't played in a true community band in a very long
time - but that sounds more like a niche ensemble than a community band.
