One orchestra I play in puts out an old sousaphone at public-venue concerts=
for donations. A couple people (usually our percussionists) put a couple o=
f their dollars in it to entice donations. We don't do anything like that a=
t our nursing home-type venues (about 1/2 and 1/2 nursing home vs. public v=
enue). We also charge (non-mandatory) dues of $25/semester. Thankfully, the=
group gets grant funding, but since that has been reduced, we've not been =
purchasing new music. The music director and one of the assistant conductor=
s are faculty members at Eastman, so they can get us music from there somet=
imes (that's how we were able to play Howard Hanson's (Romantic) 'Symphony =
#2' last year and Saint-Saens 'Morceau de Concert' for Horn and orchestra t=
his year).

Another orchestra is affiliated with their communities' adult education pro=
gram, so orchestra members pay $15 to register with community ed and $35 (p=
retty much mandatory) dues for the year.
